Credit Units for Doctoral Students at I-MATH
All doctoral students need to earn at least 12 credit units, of which at least 8 have to come from the graduate course program. Credit units can be earned as follows:
1-3 credit units can be earned with any given course listed in the Graduate Course Program with -DRL-identifier (ETH) or -DP-identifier (UZH).
From fall semester 2024 on up to 3 credit units per semester can be earned for a "Doctoral Studies Course" (at most 4 credit units in total). Until spring semester 2024 this was up to 2 credits. A 'Doctoral Studies Course' is an informal course defined by your advisor, which is not listed in the Graduate Course Program of the ZGSM. Example of such courses are retreats (summer/winter schools), conferences, working group seminars or courses outside the graduate course program. It is up to your advisor to determine if it is one or two credit units for a conference or a summer/winter school. A total of up to 4 credit units can be earned with these 'Doctoral Studies Courses'.
In general, for attending a Nachdiplom-Lecture (with -DRL-identifier) at ETH you get 2 credits. For attending "Foundation of D-MATH Doctoral Studies I or II" (new from fall semester 2024 on, also with -DRL-identifier) you get 3 credits. These foundation modules can be "filled" with ETH courses of the graduate course program that have no -DRL-identifier. For the Nachdiplom-Lectures as well as for the foundation courses an ungraded semester performance has to be done to get a "pass" and the credits. The type of ungraded semester performance is defined by the lecturer.
Concerning the registration please see: Course Registration UZH PhDs.
As language courses are not a core element of doctoral studies in Mathematics no credit units are awarded for any kind of language courses - this concerns also the ZGSM German language courses.
